THE WORKFORCE CRISIS IN CANADA

Did you know?

Canada’s birthrate is declining rapidly; we are now in the lowest population growth category globally alongside Italy, Spain, Japan, and South Korea.

1 in 5 Canadians – that’s 7 million – are 65 and older. Additionally, more than 1 in 5 Canadians are close to retirement (between 55-64 years of age).

This is unprecedented in Canadian history.

We do not have enough skilled workers to fill this gap.

This year alone, it has cost Canada’s GDP roughly $2.6 billion.

We need newcomers to help grow our economy and fill crucial labour gaps in engineering, trades, education, and healthcare, among other professions.

THE GAP: By the Numbers How Many Workers Do We Need?

In every industry classification, Canada is short thousands of skilled workers, totaling approximately 500,000-560,000 job vacancies each month.

Canada is short 64,000 skilled workers in engineering, technical occupations, and other higher-skill services.

Canada’s healthcare sector had 75,100 vacancies in the first quarter of 2025.

The current number of graduates in Canada will not address the shortages, particularly in healthcare and skilled trades.

ACCREDITATION & INTERNATIONAL TALENT Overqualification in Survival Jobs

As newcomers to Canada struggle to identify commensurate career pathways or secure the necessary accreditation, many are forced to take ‘survival jobs’ to make ends meet.

This underutilizes immigrant talent and impacts the long-term career paths, earnings, skills, and life satisfaction of immigrants.

This is a barrier to many professions but especially for occupations with long and complex certification processes such as health care and engineering.

WILL Employment Solutions is a vital service for immigrants to Canada and the Canadian economy.

We address labour shortages in our workforce, help newcomers find meaningful employment, and simultaneously drive economic stability for Canada.
