The Canadian Experience Barrier (Virtual)

We will be exploring the what the Canadian experience requirement is, its impact, and how we might shift the way we recruit.

About this event

Employers across the region are already experiencing a shortage of skilled labour, and with a declining birth rate and aging working population, the gap between positions available and skilled talent to fill those roles is expected in increase. By 2035, it is expected that the population growth of Canada will be 100% attributed to immigration, making newcomers a compelling talent pool for employers to engage with.

However, recent immigrants to Canada face high rates of both underemployment and unemployment. Even after being in Canada for fifteen years, immigrants with a university degree are still more likely than the native-born to be in low-skilled jobs. Barriers to finding jobs include a lack of recognition of foreign credentials and experience, and arbitrary requirements for Canadian experience.

In the Canadian Experience Barrier round table discussion, we will be exploring the what the Canadian experience requirement is, its impact, and how we might shift the way we recruit to better include internationally trained talent, while also fulfilling the needs of employers.
